Monday December 14th, 2015

Discussed last week's lesson plan and homework. Reviewed today's lesson plan and objectives.

Listening Comprehension

"Party Time!"


Instructor outlined some basic conversation skills to utilize in a party setting where academic and social dimensions overlap. Students acted out a party scene using both social and academic language skills. Students pretended they attended a party with some friends and some people they did not know. They took a minute to discuss their plan with each other, and then acted out the scene in class. Students used more social dimensional language with their friends and their academic dimensional language with individuals they did not know. Class discussed the differences between each conversation settings to ensure language comprehension.

Speaking

Worked on vocabulary building, phrases, and articles with our class worksheets. Had class discussion after worksheets completed to help strengthen students speaking skills.

Reading

Students read articles out loud in class to strengthen their reading and speaking skills. 

Writing


"One Wish" 

Students assigned writing prompt to help strengthen their current writing skills. Students requested to include:

  • 10 Complete sentences
  • Correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization, BME format
  • 3 Vocabulary words (underline vocabulary words)
  • Prompt
    • If you could make one wish to help others, what would it be and why? Write what wish you'd make and how it would help others. Be detailed. 
After students completed their writing, they shared their writing in class. 

Looking Ahead

Class discussed objectives for the next class and went over any questions the students had.

Homework


"Comic Words"


Students created a 6 celled comic strip, including 8 of their daily vocabulary words. Homework Objective: Strengthen spelling, comprehension, and visualization skills.

Listening Comprehension

"Action! - The Dark Knight"


Students read part of a script from a famous movie to themselves in order to understand the scene. After reviewing, students selected their role and acted it out in class. Instructor outlined the script, scene, and objectives for the activity. Students acted out the scene, then defined if the dimensions were social or academic. Class discussed the conversation setting to strengthen language comprehension.

Speaking

Worked on vocabulary building, verb tense, adverb and adjective worksheets. Class discussed worksheets once completed to help strengthen students speaking skills.

New Years Writing Activity


Students given worksheet to complete and writing assignment about New Years Eve to work on over break. Homework Objectives: Strengthen grammar skills and enhance creative writing skills. 



First Day of Class - Thursday December 10th, 2015






First Day of class, we had a great first day with the new class!!

In our first class, we took some time for introductions, had an assessment, and worked on some writing assignments. We have an extensive plan to cover in the coming weeks, and I am excited to works with the students to straighten their skills!

Introduction

Students took time to introduce themselves. They provided their names, age, likes, and dislikes, as well as what they were excited to learn in this class. The instructor also participated in the introduction discussion to help strengthen students listening comprehension. 


Class Discussion on Structure and What to Expect

Objectives and goals for today's class, and upcoming classes, were outlined. Students learned what is expected from them, as well as what they can expect from the instructor. 


Assessment

Cambridge English Language Assessment used in class to determine their fluency and language skill status. Parts 1 through 3 were assigned and completed by each student. Problems and target areas were discussed and worked out. The class assessment indicated students are at the Intermediate level. Our upcoming class lessons are for intermediate skills and will build on and enhance the students current skills.


Writing Assignment

"Sentence Starters"


Instructor wrote several sentence starters on the board. Students instructed to read each sentence to themselves and write their answers down on a sheet of paper. After students completed writing, they read the completed sentences aloud in class. Our class discussed each question to enhance listening and reading comprehension skills. 

Looking Ahead

Instructor outlined the agenda for the upcoming weeks. Informed that students will have a combination of verbal and written activities focusing on social and academic dimensions of language. 


Homework


Students are to select a movie or song to listen to. After listening to the movie or song, students are to write down words or phrases that they like and that they do not understand. Students are to bring the written words and phrases to class so we may discuss them in class on Monday December 14th.

First Day Assessment Results


Our class assessment pulled activities from the Cambridge English Language Assessment Objectives. Our class assessment focused on listening, speaking, writing, and reading and tested fluency, analytical skills, and comprehension, and complex sentence structure.

Student Assessment Results and Level


The results from the student's assessment indicate Intermediate Fluency. Students can combine phrases and sentences into longer passages of language, oral and written.

Students fluency characterized by, strong 
comprehension, use of complex sentences, and few written language errors. 

Our class assessment showed students are able to 
analyze, create, defend, debate, predict, evaluate, justify, support, examine, and hypothesize. In the upcoming weeks, our class will focus objectives to further strengthen our communicative language skills. 

Instructor and Class Focus


Upcoming classes will help students develop academic skills, especially in reading and writing, use activities that require analysis, hypothesizing, justifying and supporting. We will use worksheets, writing prompts, reading challenges, verbal exercises, problem solving, creative thinking, and vocabulary activities to help students create and enhance strong social and academic language dimensions.

Learning English Together! 
An Intermediate Class

Welcome to Ms. Adrienne's English for Portuguese Beginner Class Winter Session!

In this 9 week course, we will focus on intermediate English skills that strengthen our current skills. Below is our class outline. Please review and contact me if there are any questions. I am excited for the opportunity, and look forward to working with the students! 

Goals 

Students will learn integration of language skills, thinking skills, and content knowledge. To reach our goals, our class will have interactive lessons with hands-on activities and cooperative learning.  Our class environment provides encouragement of students creativity and discovery, versatility and flexibility, enhancement and support of current skills, and opportunities for all students to feel successful.

Social and Academic Dimensions

The class lesson plan will focus on both the social dimension and the academic dimension of language. Students social dimension enhancement will involve everyday communication; listening, speaking, carrying on basic conversation, understanding speakers, and getting one's basic needs met. The academic dimension portion of class focuses on skills that are needed to succeed in the academic classroom, including problem solving, inferring, analyzing, synthesizing, and predicting.

Structure

Listening Comprehension

Skills enhanced using nontechnical speech exercises, including conversation with teachers and classmates. These exercises include teacher verbal demonstrations, class reenactments, educational videos, and discussion activities. Part of our lesson will come from Mango Languages focusing on Conversational English.

Speaking

The class speaking strategy focuses on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Grammar and word order are used so students have a strong idea of basic sentence patterns. Class vocabulary words are used in social and academic settings so students may carry on the appropriate conversation in each environment. Pronunciation activities encourage intelligibility, understandability, and smooth utterances.

Reading

Our class reading objective is to improve independent and class reading performance skills. Students will read aloud and to themselves in class. Students are expected to discuss their reading in class verbally and in writing to strengthen comprehension skills. 

Writing

Our writing plan focuses on enhancing complex sentence structure in independent, social, and academic writing. Writing activities include various writing prompts, worksheets, and writing challenges.

Our class meets twice a week, Monday and Thursday, between 4:30pm and 5:30pm.
