Class Introduction and Outline

Learning English Together!
An Intermediate Class

Welcome to Ms. Adrienne's English for Portuguese Beginner Class Winter Session!

In this 9 week course, we will focus on intermediate English skills that strengthen our current skills. Below is our class outline. Please review and contact me if there are any questions. I am excited for the opportunity, and look forward to working with the students!

Goals

Students will learn integration of language skills, thinking skills, and content knowledge. To reach our goals, our class will have interactive lessons with hands-on activities and cooperative learning.  Our class environment provides encouragement of students creativity and discovery, versatility and flexibility, enhancement and support of current skills, and opportunities for all students to feel successful.

Social and Academic Dimensions

The class lesson plan will focus on both the social dimension and the academic dimension of language. Students social dimension enhancement will involve everyday communication; listening, speaking, carrying on basic conversation, understanding speakers, and getting one's basic needs met. The academic dimension portion of class focuses on skills that are needed to succeed in the academic classroom, including problem solving, inferring, analyzing, synthesizing, and predicting.

Structure

Listening Comprehension

Skills enhanced using nontechnical speech exercises, including conversation with teachers and classmates. These exercises include teacher verbal demonstrations, class reenactments, educational videos, and discussion activities. Part of our lesson will come from Mango Languages focusing on Conversational English.

Speaking

The class speaking strategy focuses on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Grammar and word order are used so students have a strong idea of basic sentence patterns. Class vocabulary words are used in social and academic settings so students may carry on the appropriate conversation in each environment. Pronunciation activities encourage intelligibility, understandability, and smooth utterances.

Reading

Our class reading objective is to improve independent and class reading performance skills. Students will read aloud and to themselves in class. Students are expected to discuss their reading in class verbally and in writing to strengthen comprehension skills.

Writing

Our writing plan focuses on enhancing complex sentence structure in independent, social, and academic writing. Writing activities include various writing prompts, worksheets, and writing challenges.
